On 20th April there was, in Sicily, an Earthquake and the epicentre was near Messina. Luckily there was no damage to people or buildings. So the Earth reminds us it is alive and we have to do the best to save it.
That’s why every year on April 22nd, citizens of the world celebrate the Earth and promote its preservation by “ Earth Day”.
But what does the Earth Day mean?
Earth Day is the largest environmental manifestation on the Planet. The first Earth Day was in 1970 in the USA and it was the idea of John McConell. On that day, millions of people went out into streets and called for better protection of the environment. The United Nations celebrate Earth Day after the spring equinox and this world movement involves 192 countries around the world.
Environmental groups use this day to evaluate Planet’s problems such as pollution, the destruction of ecosystems, global warming and the reduction of non-renewable resources.
In the last years, young people are more conscious about the problems of the Planet, thanks also to the action of Greta Thunberg, a Swedish climate activist who, at the age of 15, started an international youth movement to fight climate change.
Earth Day is an important day to remember that we have to pay attention to our Planet, we have to insist on solution to eliminate the negative effects of human activities, we have to protect the Planet…our HOME!!
